For Nandos in Collaboration
with Dokter and Misses

The Sangu Bench was created in response to the Nandos Hot Young Designers Competition in 2020 to create a covid-response-bench. The bench was then further expanded into a collection of multiple benches, a lights, a credenza, and a side table all forming part of the Sangu Collection.

  • The Sangu bench was a response to The Nando’s Hot Young Designer Competition in 2020, which called upon aspiring furniture designers to design benches that you find at every Nando’s restaurant. These are provided for guests to sit on while they wait for their takeaway orders. Nandos asked what these benches should look like in the age of social distancing, and whether they can
be easily adapted once we can safely sit together once again. Aspiring furniture designers were asked to design a show-stopping bench, with a reminder of the resilience of the African spirit, and a celebration of Southern Africa’s ever-evolving and eclectic design aesthetic.

  • The Sangu Bench is inspired by the organic forms found in the movement and shape of the traditional African grass mats which have been used across various African cultures as carpets, mats, screens and room dividers.

  • Through a collaboration initiated by CLOUT/SA’s creative director, Tracy Lee Lynch, the first of the Sangu collection has been brought to life, by drawing on the manufacturing expertise of Adriaan Hugo, the designer and co-founder of the award-winning design studio, Dokter and Misses. More than a straightforward manufacturing collaboration. The Sangu collection is available on the Nandos Portal and has been purchased across the world in various Nandos’ casas across the globe.
